Moving Minds Celebration

7 months ago by mmman
The celebrations are over, the curtain has come down... or has it?

I want to say a final big thank you to everyone - students, staff and parents - and I want to ask, what are you going to to next? Are you going to use your new found skills? I know I am! Do you know more things now than you did about museums in September?

Have a think and I hope to see you all around the museum soon.

London Preparation - What makes a good leader?

10 months ago by mmman
Happy New Year!
Hope you're all ok and not still too stuffed on turkey and all the Christmas trimmings!! Well, it's going to be an interesting start to 2008 as we're off to London in a couple of weeks. Hope you're all looking forward to it!
Now, it's not just a jolly little holiday to our nation's capital, I want you to do a little bit of work whilst we're there. We're going to be looking at some different types of leaders and why they do the things they do in the way they do. I know Fairham has been talking to lots of different people, from firemen to policemen, and up in Manchester we've been thinking about political leaders like Mrs Thacher.
But leaders can come in any form. What use is a Prime Minsiter with no power to inspire? But equally, how does a policeman calm a situation down and take control? The same skills are needed for both.
So, we're going to look at Churchill as a major political leader. If you get a chance, do a bit of research and see what people have said about him. He tops poll after poll as the top Briton as a statesman, soldier, author, orator and artist, but does everyone think this? How did he get to this iconic position?
On the Sunday, we're going to look at why we collect and how we store things. You've all been to IWM North or NCCL, or both, and we have stuff in cases. Well, why do we have it? Where did it come from? Is there more? If so, where's the rest? Why is this bit on display and that bit isn't?
The last questions hinges around making decisions again, like leaders do all the time. Leaders take decisions that have immediate or long-lasting impacts, the decisions museums make are often of the longer lasting variety.
Anyway, I'd better go. So, have a think and I'll see you all soon.
All the best,
Kate

11/11 Remembrance - Preparation

A long time ago by mmman

I hope you&am;#8217;re all looking forward to Sunday&am;#8217;s visit to Imperial War Museum North? You&am;#8217;re going to be meeting some veterans from the Second World War, the Falklands conflict and some other post -1945 conflicts. They are happy to be very open and honest with you about what they did while they served, how they felt at the time and how they feel about it now. As it&am;#8217;s Remembrance Day, we&am;#8217;re also going to reflect on those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom through the two minutes silence and some of the other events during the day.

I&am;#8217;ve split you into three groups for Sunday&am;#8217;s event and each group is a mix of all the four groups (three schools from Manchester and one from Nottingham), so there will be people you know in the group, but I&am;#8217;m hoping you start to talk to each other as well!

After Sunday 11 November, we&am;#8217;re all going to meet up again in January 2008 (as 2007 is disappearing fast!) in London, and in March in Nottingham.

In between times, once you&am;#8217;ve put faces to names on Sunday, you can comment on each other stories through Radiowaves and keep in touch through the blogs.

Finally, I&am;#8217;m afraid I won&am;#8217;t be with you on Sunday as I&am;#8217;m with a Welsh youth group in France and Belgium at the First World War battle sites as part of the TPYF2 commemorative visits. You can find out more about them from the Radiowaves homepage. So, to those of you in Manchester, I&am;#8217;ll see you later in November, and to those of you in Nottingham who I haven&am;#8217;t met yet, I look forward to January! Until then, I&am;#8217;m looking forward to listening to your stories.

Byeeeeeeeeeeee!
