Today (Friday 29th February 2008), Professor Jonathan Tonge was announced as chair of the new Youth Citizenship Commission which focus on young people aged 11-19 year.
The Youth Citizenship Commission is all about:
-Examine what citizenship means to young people.
-Consider how to increase young people's participation in politics; the development of citizenship among disadvantaged groups; how active citizenship can be promoted through volunteering and community engagement.
-Lead a consultation on whether the voting age should be lowered to 16.
From my point of view I think it is a very good idea to have a Youth Citizenship Commission for a number of reasons some of which are so young people know about citizenship and get involved in their local communities, politics and raise an issue with matters which they think should change such as lowering the voting age to 16 years of age.
