Brooklands keep promotion hopes alive!
Sheffield UB 1 - 5 Brooklands MU
Brooklands Manchester University managed to banish the memory of last week’s defeat at home to Old Georgians by securing a deserved 5-1 victory away at Sheffield Bankers in the First Division of the Slazenger England Hockey League on Sunday.
Brad King put the re-shuffled Brooklands side ahead after a fairly even start to the game, but the lead was short lived as Sheffield’s Steve Andrews levelled just two minutes later, to leave it 1-1 at the break.
Coach John Bell told the players at half time that there would be “no room for excuses” in the second half, and the side duly responded by firing four past the struggling Sheffield defence in the ensuing 35 minutes.
John Bell and Martin Scanlon bagged a goal apiece, while a Mark Richardson strike ensured that Brooklands would be leaving Yorkshire with all three points.
Victory at Sheffield leaves Brooklands just four points off first place, and with a play off spot also up for grabs with just three games remaining, next Sunday’s trip to fellow promotion contenders Bath, represents a real opportunity for the Cheshire side to enhance their promotion credentials.
