Newshound Day

An enjoyable day with a top news editor from the Worksop Guardian and Magna’s managing director Matthew Beck on hand, a journalist challenge ahead and creative workshops to explore? Brinsworth Comprehensive School’s enthusiastic student journalists had the chance to experience the entertaining action on Wednesday 13th March. Hosted by the Rotherham College of Arts and Technology the ‘News Hound’ day (as it was called) was a great success with both cub reporters (from local primary schools) and student journalists enjoying the creative environment. The day started off with Jacky’s top tips for writing a good article, she went on to suggest:
• The headline has to sum up the story but not give away too much as well as being punchy and attention grabbing.
• The pictures should reflect the story and be well captured.
• The layout of the page should not be clumped together and needs to contrast the different stories.
• The standard of the copy should be high with no spelling mistakes or grammatical errors.
Later on in the morning everyone’s interests were waiting to be explored in the workshops. Each workshop lasted 10 minutes in which different aspects of journalism were experienced. Personally the TV and radio broadcasting did it for me. These workshops were great as short snippets of information were given out which made it enjoyable.
Then came the time for competition and, oh yes, we were competitive; given 90 minutes (that were actually 80 minutes after the introduction at the beginning) we had to produce an engaging article. Using the top tips that were given on the layout, copy, pictures and headline we rushed to complete our article. This allowed us to witness the true journalist environment and, trust me on this, it is tough and energetic.
All in all it was a fantastic day we came home with lots of information about the field of journalism and of course a trophy for the best picture which was won by the Brinsworth team!
