Brooklands travel to South West England to take on the Bath Buccs in the first division of the Slazenger England Hockey League
Bath Buccs 1 v Brooklands 2
A tight 2-1 victory away in windswept Bath on Sunday has kept Brooklands Manchester University’s promotion hopes very much alive in the First Division of the Slazenger England Hockey League.
Taking an early 1-0 lead, Bath started the game in typically high tempo fashion and the home side were perhaps unlucky not to find themselves further ahead early on, having been denied by some sharp goalkeeping from an alert Lee Ible.
As Brooklands played themselves into the game, two well taken goals either side of half time turned the tie in their favour. Firstly, Mark Richardson slotted home a skilfully crafted equaliser, before Peter Flanagan struck once again from a short corner to put the Cheshire side 2-1 in front.
Brooklands could consider themselves unfortunate not to extend their lead in the latter stages, but the resulting victory can be largely attributed to the continuous and unrelenting work rate of their forwards.
This work rate was replicated throughout the side: from goalkeeper, right through to the forward line as the well organised Brooklands side battled hard to condemn Bath to their first home defeat in the league this season.
The Brooklands victory sets up a mouth watering contest against Old Loughtonians at George’s Road on Sunday 30th March, (13:45 start), when both sides will be gunning for all three points in their respective quests for promotion.
