Money comes in many different forms: coins, notes, cheques, gold and electronic money.
Money envolved independently ion different areas of the world - only the Incas did not use it.
Precious metals used to be weighed out as a common form of money, but these were easy to counterfeit and eventually the metals became stamped as a guarantee of their purity.
One of the reasons that coins became so common is their conveinience- it was a lot easier to count coins than to wiegh them.
Today we use money as a means of payment or exchange, and also to have a common measure of value.
