Britain's Atlantis has been discovered 500 years after it fell into the sea!
A lost city has been found underwater just off the coast of England. The city is thought to have fallen of an eroding cliff more than 500 years ago!
Divers say that they have discovered the ruins of medieval St.Johns church, from the lost city of Dunwich, which tumbled into the sea off the coast of Suffolk in about 1540.
Dunwich used to be a busy city and 3,000 people lived their. Marine archeologists knew that the city was there some where but didn't ever expect to find it because many others had failed to do so.
Stuart Bacon said "I've been looking for it for about 35 years, so it's very exciting"
Stuart said that there was about a 2 metre layer of silt covering the ruins!He said that it was like 'doing a survey of the air when there has been a thick covering of snow'. Only the tallest things stick out of the water.
Stuart and a Team from the University of Southampton are using the latest technology to find out more about the lost city in the North Sea. Nowadays Dunwich is just a small coastal village with a graveyard and a few very old houses, this little part of the remains that survived is still under threat from the sea.
However, back in 1086 only 20 years after the Norman conquest the city was an important and tremendously busy trading port with six parish churches. It used to be the same size as London before it fell into the sea. What nobody knew then was that the city would be destroyed by The North Sea drift which eroded the cliff over the years.
This summer, Stuart and some other archeologists will be exploring the sunken city to uncover its secrets which have been hidden for years.
