PLANTING season isn’t quite over yet. There’s still time to grow the lovely green vegetable courgette!
They may start off as little plants but, as they grow, their branches and leaves take up a lot of room. You don’t have to have a garden, though. A big tub will do.
What you will need:
The biggest plant pot you can find, A courgette plant, Compost, Watering can
What to do:
1. Fill the plant pot with compost.
2. Make a hole in the middle of the pot with your hands and place the plant in it. Cover the roots with soil so that only the branches and leaves stick out and press down the soil to secure in place.
3. Water the soil, being careful to avoid getting the leaves wet as this could make them go rotten. Make sure the compost doesn’t dry out.
4. Look out for the courgettes growing. They start with a pretty yellow flower.
5. When the courgette is about 10cm long you can cut them at their base. The flowers can be cooked and eaten, too. If a courgette is left on the plant for a few more weeks it will become a marrow!
