Sammy, Charlotte and Natalie find out about our Year 9 Recycling Awareness Project. Listen to their interview with Mr Williamson, the Head of Art & Design
As part of the Garforth Arts Festival the Art & Design department wished to make a contribution to the festival and raise awareness of recycling.
We arranged to use two days June 16 & 17 2008 with a selection from the 100+ Year 9 learners who are currently following a GCSE or BTEC First visual art courses to produce a family of Robots made exclusively from recycled plastic containers [bottles, yogurt cartons etc] and cardboard.
Students and staff collected waste plastic and cardboard and forty five year 9 art students created a family of robots (including pet ‘robodog’) from the ‘rubbish’
The completed robots and the designs are exhibited in the art gallery for the duration of the arts festival.
In order for this work to have happened it required team work throughout the college regarding promotion, an awareness program, the collection of the raw materials and funding for additional materials.
Equally the 45 learners demonstrated an incredible degree of enthusiasm and physical hard work but more importantly were clearly able to work in collaborative creative teams with a collective goal.
I feel that this on their part at the age of 14 was stunning and when given the opportunity to be left to their own creative devises never failed to impress the art teaching team who where looking after and working with them. They achieved a great deal with limited resources in what amounts to 8 hours of work!
Thank you
The Garforth Art & Design Team
