They’ve played all over South Yorkshire, won Battle of the Bands at the Boardwalk and they are gonna be the next big band to come out of Sheffield, The Basement Project spoke to me coincidentally in their basement.

Joe c; I'm Joe on guitar
Rick; I'm Rick on guitar
Dex; I'm Declan Davies, I play drums
Me; who’s missing from the band
Dex; Leo on bass and Joe Horsey, lead singer and lyricist.
Me; describe your band in one word from each of you.
Dex; tough one

Joe C; you were supposed to say ‘the’
Dex; yeah well I don’t wanna say ‘the’, ‘the’ describes nothing, it’s just a pointless word
Joe C; it was just a joke

Me; alright, what’s your sound like?
Joe C; the mix of every other band in the world
Rick; Mexican regional, trumpets and flutes
Dex; Saudi Arabian
Rick; Egyptian.
Dex; nah just indie stuff
Rick; lil’ Chris influenced me quite a lot, with his melodic lyrics and rhythms

Rick; he gets me goin at clubs
Dex; he helped us through our first few songs
Me; did he get you through
Rick; he broke us through the barrier
Me; where do you get the ideas for lyrics from rick?
Dex; I think, from what we hear he has serious…

Dex; that’s what some people do
Joe C; well, just rick really
Me; what’s the biggest highlight of your career so far?
Dex; we won battle of the bands at the boardwalk in 2007
Me; was it euphoric?
Dex; I was err over the moon
Joe C; immense.
Me; so you like performing live?
Dex; yeah performing live is probably one of the best feelings you get from playing music, seeing the crowd goin crazy is the best part.
Me; have you got any up and coming gigs for us to know about?
Rick; we’ve got boardwalk on 15 July should be good
Me; alright, describe rick in four words
Dex; shanky, shaggy, scruffy, homeless
Me; if you could work with anyone musically who would it be?
Dex; well obviously lil’ Chris, rick loves him
Me; yeah apart from your greatest hero
Rick; Fiddy cent, cos he touched me deep

Me; who gets stressed out the most?

Dex; he prefers to shout at rick cos rick has a lower threshold to pain

Dex; but its not all about getting far, we do you it because it’s a hobby, we like making music and if other people like it then that’s great.
