42 year 10 students visit Aldershot army base to learn what opportunities they have to offer

We took 42 year 10 students and 4 members of staff for an informative visit to the army base at Aldershot in Hampshire on Thursday 3 July 2008. The purpose of the day was to help our students decide whether the army was a career they might be interested in.

The army has many different professions that are in the areas of combat, engineering, logistics and support, intelligence and ICT, human resources and finance, medical and music! There is a massive range of jobs within the army were there is, literally, something for everyone.

The army takes students from school, college and university and they can even provide scholarships to help students study.

Our students were allowed to roam free around the arena and take part in and observe many of the activities. The good news is no one got shot or was arrested by the Military Police so that bodes well for the future.

There were stalls representing all of the major army professioins in addition to displays for all (horses, motor bikes, parachutists and mock battles). There were also competitions running throughout the day for our students to take part in such as a football competition.

Our students could also have camoflage paint put on them as if they were real soldiers - although our coach driver insisted they take it off when they got back on the coach. A good thing or else we might never have seen them (with the paint on - rubbish joke!).

Our Shenley Brook End students all behaved fantatsically and said they really enjoyed the day.

I wonder who will join the army after taking part in this day out to Aldershot?

Whatever happens I never realised how interesting and fulfilling an army career could be. But, all that time away from home wouldn't suit everyone - certainly not me.
