Champions 5 years in a row
When we eventually found the basketball court for this teams fith year in a row as Trafford Schools Champions and once again making the under rated Ashton Basketball history.
We played in our gd kit as usuall but we were short on 2 pairs of shorts! We mixed our better kit jerseys with the old kits shorts which i think suprizingly made a gd combination.
Everyone was really up for this game especialy the year 11's as this would be there last game for Ashton on Mersey, unfortunately year 11 player Rory missed his last game to a back injury.
We began the game with a bang, just playing our fast style basketball, getting steals on the majority of Wellington'soffenses and quickly converting them into easy 2 pointers for us. We finished the half having blown Wellington out with a distant score of 27-7.
In the second half, Wellington must have had a good team talk as they came back, forgetting the score and playing as if the game had restarted, where as we came back as if we were already five times champions. They stepped up defensively cutting off the easy baskets thay were giving us in the first half, there offense stayed generally the same, they continued to score every now and then. But it all built up and they managed to get within arms reach at 33-22, but it was all just too little too late with a final score of 39-27.
We won the game! As we expected and as this was coach Mr Stevensens last year at the school and therefore last year as coach, the players took one of the old jerseys, each signed it and gave it to him, so he will always remember possibly the best Ashton basketball squad ever!!
