Why can't it be both? For the third in the series of his columns, Surrealist looks at Graffitti - and forms his own opinions - what are yours?
Graffiti has always existed, it was the original backbone of art, giving us views into the past that have yet to be equaled. I am of coarse referring to cave drawings some people forget that they are classed as graffiti, and many more don’t seem to realize their importance and influence on art today. Admittedly I am against "I was here 2k8" "ya mam" or "all gays are gay" because they lack thought, effort and even the slightest bit of intelligence or culture (but whoever wrote the last one must be really dense as it seems apparent that all gays are indeed gay, though it did make me laugh). Saying this, when you start looking at the graffiti that possesses a little bit of culture (for example Banksy) you start to see the true nature of graffiti, unrelenting free expression with a lot of technical ability and just a touch of civil disobedience. Graffiti has always been used as a way of fighting oppression, as its very existence is against the establishment graffiti cultured or not is someone’s right to express what’s on their mind and as long as it’s not ist (sexist, racist etc..) gang related or used as a weapon against innocent people then it’s alright with me. But I still think we should have better things to say then I was here unless of course it "I was here 2k8” has a deeper meaning behind it.
