Get ready for what could be one of the most controversial Olympic Games ever held...
It’s the most wonderful time of the (leap) year, yes the XXIX Olympiad is here with a large amount of pre-opening event press. Human rights, the smog, Tibet...the column inches have been stacking up, but what about the athletes?
This is a topic we have touched on before. When the Olympic Torch travelled the globe, the controversy got more coverage then the flame and the occasion itself. Innocent athletes and torch-bearers were being attacked, can the pro-Tibet protesters justify this?
The Chinese government has gone into overdrive to try and present a friendly global image, throwing out bizarre rules like only wearing three colours in public, and the banning of slippers.
And then there’s the weather. China’s explosion of industry has created horrible environmental conditions, with a thick smog often lingering over the now famous Birds Nest Stadium. Is this the ideal condition to run a marathon in?
