On the 23rd June 2009 4 of our S2R reporters interviewed Dr Steve Fabes who in 2010 is planning to cycle around the world.
This however is not his first experience at cycling long journeys as when he was only 19 him and his younger brother, aged just 17, cycled across Chile, the longest country from south to north in the world. This journey took 5 months to complete and in the process managed to raise alot of money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
Steve Fabes did however take a break from cycling and in that time qualified as a Doctor in 2005 and worked in Liverpool for 2 years before being offered a job at Guys and St Thomas' Hospitals in London in the intesive care department.
Fabes's new adventure takes him around the world where he will be visiting all 6 continents!
Steve is predicting that this journey will take around 4 1/2 years to complete which makes his Chile trip seem like a walk in the park.
All of this is being done to help the charity Merlin. This what Steve Fabes had to say on what the charity Merlin did:
" As a doctor, off on a truly global adventure, I felt it was important to help a charity which delivered medical aid worldwide. A friend told me about Merlin and I did some research. I was really inspired by Merlin’s dedication and approach to providing medical humanitarian aid. They are the only specialist UK charity which responds worldwide with vital health care and medical relief"
He is planning to raise £50,000 for Merlin whlist on his journey keeping us constanly updated on his situation at each continent.
With only 188 days left to get prepare, we all from S2R wish him thebest of luck on his journey.
